Conditions of participation

Which expenses are covered by GLEN?

Within GLEN, the conditions of participation depend on the GLEN partner organisation and can differ from one country to another.

GLEN supports most of the participants with a scholarship for 3 months in the host country, insurance (for health, liability and accidents) for the duration of the internship and gives a subsidy for the travel to the host country. The amount of financial grants, subsidies for travel and health insurance during the internship in the host country differ according to the home country of the participants. In order to get further information you are welcome to contact the GLEN partner organisation in your home country.

In most cases you will get a subsidy for travel expenses for participating in the two preparation seminars and the follow up seminar (RENew seminar). This subsidy covers around half of the travel costs to the seminars. This amount also differs according to the home country of the participants. The whole subsidy is transferred in most cases (depending on the GLEN home organisation) about 4 weeks before leaving the country. French participants have significantly different financial conditions of participating in GLEN. Please ask the GLEN partner organisation in your home country for more concrete information in these cases.

What is expected from the participants?

GLEN depends on the engagement of volunteers and committed partner organisations. Therefore certain expectations must be fulfilled by every participant to run a satisfactory program for all people involved.

The participants are expected to:
  • participate actively in 2 training and preparation seminars,
  • prepare themselves carefully for the internship in the Global South and take part the internship together with their tandem partner and their hosting organisation for the length of three months,
  • write an interim report in the host country and the final report after the return from the internship,
  • carry out a Global Education activity on the national or/and the European level,
  • participate actively in the RENew seminar (the evaluation seminar).

The participants are also expected to fulfill any obligations that are expected from them from the part of their home country GLEN partner organisation. These special commitments are agreed upon between each home GLEN partner organisation and the participants before the start of the co-operation. Please get further information by asking the GLEN partner organisation in your home country.

As all people involved put a lot of effort into the successful realisation of your GLEN training cycle, we anticipate a cooperative attitude of the participants vis-à-vis your home GLEN partner organisation, the GLEN network, the training and preparation team, the tandem partner and the host partner organisation.
GLEN participants are expected to be respectful and tolerant and to identify with the goals of GLEN and of the participants' home GLEN partner organisation.

Moreover, in order to make the participants' stay in the South fruitful for all people involved, they are asked to develop the necessary skills, particularly inter-cultural sensitivity and language skills. Last, but not least, the participants should dispose of the adequate physical and psychological condition for a stay in the host country and for the particular internship. In their own interest, this should be reflected self-critically primarily by themselves.

And again: If you have any questions, just get in touch with the GLEN partner organisation in your home country and ask!

Travelling? Yes but climate-friendly!

The goals of GLEN also need to be considered while travelling to the seminars in Europe and to the host country: flying becomes more and more easy and cheap - but to fly means to emit an enormous amount of CO2, which contributes to climate change, of which the world's poorest suffer most. Is there an alternative?

Travel by train or bus. For the seminars in Europe, travelling by train or bus is strongly recommended. Train can also be a cheap alternative concerning many routes to the hosting countries in the South/East (e.g. travels to Asia)

Travel by ship. Choose the exotic with all its special attractions!

Compensate for flight emissions at initiatives such as Myclimate or Atmosfair. At these organisations, one can buy a compensation certificate. The money paid for the certificate is invested in projects that work against climate change. This way, the emissions caused by flying are off-set. It would be better not to fly at all - but if it cannot be avoided, compensating the emissions is highly recommended. More information and a calculator for emissions can be found at www.myclimate.org and www.atmosfair.de.
