EWEA established a computerised information and resource centre for export oriented female entrepreneurs in Addis Abeba (Ethiopia) and offers a broad range of demand oriented services, including individual consulting, trainings, advocating on policy issues and establishing effective network participation in international trade fairs. The didactical revolution in Ethiopian Universities

Number: C300104304
Field of Studies: educational science, pedagogics, intercultural communication
Vocational Field: -
Language: English
Number of Participants: 2

The engineering capacity building program (ECBP), which is a result of close cooperation between the Ethiopian and the German governments, aims at accelerating industrial development in Ethiopia by analysing and reforming the country's universities. The programme focuses on the relation between education and employment. Competence centres have been established as a part of universities in different locations in Ethiopia. These centres are entitled to provide technical and didactical support in terms of e-learning and methodology to the teachers.

During their internship the GLEN participants will deal with the development of didactical methods for the context of Ethiopian universities. By working for an internationally integrated institution, interns have the chance to experience a different educational system and the influence of global interdependencies. Interns are expected to bring in basic didactical knowledge, which is needed for the visits of the competence centres. Activities involve the exchange with local experts and a contrastive evaluation of the centre's advancements. Finally, interns will support the competence centres with the development of practical didactical approaches for the local context and the planning of teacher trainings. Therefore the interns will be part of a team evaluating the didactical methods in the four participating universities (Bahir Dar, Adama, Mekele, Tchimba) with the help of classroom observation and contacts with teachers and the staff from the competence centres.

Basic skills in information and communication technologies (ICT) are required as well as some knowledge about e-learning. For the practical implementation of the project it is essential to be willing to travel: the four different universities that the participants will be working at are spread all over the country.

The scheduled time for the internship is October to December 2010.

The training and preparation seminars before the internship will take place in English. The GLEN team will be composed of one German/ Swiss and one Hungarian participant.

Learning Unlimited: ICT-based education

Number: C300104305
Field of Studies: Education, Culture, Ethnology, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Sociology
Vocational Field: -
Language: English
Number of Participants: 2

Innovative learning is a concept developed by the local experts and international staff of the “Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit” (GTZ). It aims at meeting the newly arising educational needs in Ethiopia. At the very same time, it combines them with existing innovative technologies and methods. The GTZ has been working in Ethiopia since the early 1970's. It has gained a highly valuable and culturally specific expertise and knowledge about planning and implementing development programmes in Ethiopia. The GTZ is now implementing its programmes based on the "Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness", which includes a higher involvement of local decision makers and actors. In the case of this particular GLEN internship, the GTZ is cooperating with the Ethiopian Ministry of Education, the Ethiopian Ministry of Capacity Building, the local educational bureaus and parents-teacher associations in four regions.

Studies of the Ethiopian education system have been carried out in the past. However, more research has to be done and relevant methods of implementing knowledge gained need to be elaborated. The GLEN participants assist the GTZ. Their task is to assist the Ethiopian school system and to help implement ICT-related educational projects (e.g. trainings on laptops in schools). The GLEN participants plan, carry out and evaluate these activities. They work in close cooperation with the local staff of both GTZ and its partner organisations.

The participants should bring a solid technical background in intercultural relations and in ICT. Furthermore, the interns need basic skills in research, which means they should be able to prepare questionnaires, define indicators for data-collection and conduct a research.

The scheduled time for the internship is September to November 2009.

The training and preparation seminars before the internship take place in English. The GLEN team will be composed of one German/Swiss and one Latvian participant. In order to strengthen the Baltic sea cooperation, German applications from Hamburg are particularly welcome.
