Zambian High Schools usually host pupils from far away places. Subsequently, these boarding schools are not only a space for learning, but also a place to live. “Masuku High School” is one of them. The High School is situated in the Southern Province in Zambia. The school is connected with the next town Choma by 76 km dirt road. It is run by the “United Church of Zambia” (UCZ) and provides education for 450 pupils from all over the country. The school faces many different challenges such as the lack of teachers or teaching resources.
The GLEN participants support the teachers to distribute the workload more evenly. Furthermore, they can offer additional afternoon activities for the students. GLEN participants teach Natural Sciences or English in Masuku High School. They are in the same position as other teachers at the school, which includes a workload of about 20 lessons of 40 minutes per week. This will give them the possibility to experience the daily routine of a teacher’s life in Zambia. The GLEN participants are encouraged to come up with ideas for free time offers during afternoons, e.g. drama classes, soccer, volleyball, chess, culture, choir or agricultural activities. As the GLEN participants work for the school, they also take part in the weekly assemblies.
Differing pedagogical methods (experiments, group work, discussions, etc.) and the ability and creativity to teach with limited resources are required for this internship.
The scheduled time for the internship is September to November 2010.
The training and preparation seminars before the internship take place in English. The GLEN team will be composed of one German/Swiss and one Czech participant.
