Kongo village is located in one of the poorest regions of Northern Ghana. Agriculture, hunting and forestry are the main economic activities in the region. The Kongo Community Development Association (KOCDA) was formed in May 2009 in order to enhance the development of Kongo village. KOCDA is mainly involved in the fields of education and community empowerment. A community centre has been established where computer trainings for adults and English classes for children take place. Plans are being worked out to start a local crafts centre and microcredit loan scheme.
The GLEN participants take an active role in all ongoing projects of KOCDA. They have the opportunity to accompany a young NGO in its shaping. The concrete tasks include developing and conducting computer skills training and English reading classes for children as well as setting up a craft centre at Kongo village. The interns work closely with the members of the association in developing, managing and evaluating various projects.
A medium level of computer skills, some experiences with traditional crafts making and in teaching children or adults are required. Participants should have the ability to work independently on specific tasks as well as to propose their own ideas to the organisation.
The scheduled time for the internship is August to October 2010.
The preparatory phase of the internship takes place in English. The GLEN internship team will be composed of one German/ Swiss and one Estonian participant. In order to strengthen the Baltic sea cooperation, German applications from Hamburg are particularly welcome
